Researchers have considered all the known killings of chimps by other chimps, searching for patterns in the data. One regularity stands out: the more adult male chimps there are in a region, the more killings.
(Interaction with humans, which some pro-chimpanzee enthusiasts thought would explain how chimps turn violent, is not a factor. The most violent chimp communities actually have the least involvement with humans.)
