According to the Washington Post, one of the most romantic spots in Washington, and a common spot for public marriage proposals, is the Lincoln Memorial.
Why? Is it the thrill of being under Lincoln's sad, marble gaze? Do young politicos get off on reading his speeches, carved on the walls? Is it young black couples imagining being present for King's "Dream" speech? The Greek Temple atmosphere? History buffs?
I love the place, but it makes me cry.
The enormity of the service Lincoln paid the nation, and his enduring serenity and respect for the dignity of all humanity, coupled with the inane reality of his tragic death at the hands of worthless men, it strikes at all notions of the personal sense of justice.
