I was writing the other day about contemporary artists needing gimmicks, and yesterday I stumbled across two more good examples. One was a guy who does his (very good) drawings on the back of envelopes. And then there is Carl Jara, who has made it big by traveling the world entering sand sculpture contests. Obviously he is working on a different plane than your average crafter of buxom mermaids. But seeing no path to an artistic career working in clay or stone, he went into sand, so all of these very interesting works get washed away by the tide.
