I visited an archaeological site yesterday along the Shenandoah River in Virginia that some of my colleagues are excavating for a bridge replacement. The site is stratified, with major components in the Late Woodland (ca. 900 to 1300 AD) and Early Woodland (ca. 1350 to 800 BC) periods, separated by a nice sterile zone. There are complications with the stratigraphy and the dating, but I think the excavators will be able to sort everything out and get some good results.
Cleaning up a hearth in the Early Woodland layers. This and numerous other features produced datable charcoal, so the site should produce a good suite of dates.
Nice view from the site, and it was a gorgeous day.
