I spent the day at Antietam. In the morning, while I was waiting for my crew to show up, I drove down to the hamlet of Antietam Furnace. This is at the mouth of Antietam Creek, a dozen houses surrounding the bridge and the old iron furnace.
The furnace. This one was built in the 1870s, replacing an earlier one; the first was build around 1765.
Wonderful flower garden by the old furnace manager's house, now a restaurant.
A cute old house in town.
Heron on the Potomac River, seen from the creek mouth.
But I've seen the furnace before, and for me the highlight of this visit was the amazing garden just up the road at Potomac View Farms.
