Two statues unearthed at the Maya site of Tonina, both depicting war captives, have inscriptions that confirm an alliance between the Lordships of Copan, in Honduras, and Palenque, in Mexico, during the war that Palenque fought against Tonina for 26 years (688 to 714 AD) to control the Usumacinta River. Our knowledge of Maya political history is becoming increasingly detailed. We now have lists of the rulers of most of the twenty largest towns and know how many of them were related to each other, as well as the alliances between the rulers and the wars they fought.
