A new report has just been published on a human jawbone found in a cave in Serbia that argues the specimen is neither Neanderthal nor fully modern. It dates to at least 113,000 years ago.
Tools were also found in the cave, although that doesn't mean they were used by the person whose jawbone was found; after all, they might have belonged to people who ate the person whose jawbone was found.
This is very preliminary, but it provides another hint at the lost complexity of genus Homo; once we had many relatives, but now we are alone. Probably because we killed all of our cousins.
