Because it's from Australia, and that makes it a marsupial. So it is more closely related to a kangaroo than it is to a cat, and the saber-toothed cats of North America and Europe are more closely related to whales than they are to this thing. And yet, look at those fangs, and compare this to the smilodon skull below. I know about convergent evolution, but this seems to me like a freaky case.
