Several years ago some paleontologists were exploring Lena Hara Cave in East Timor (in the Indonesian archipelago), looking for the bones of extinct giant rats. Instead they found a group of stylized faces carved into the rock. The cave had already been explored by archaeologists interested in its numerous rock paintings, but these carvings had not been noted. One carving was
recently dated using a uranium isotope method, which yielded an estimated age of 10,000 to 12,000 years.
