Lockheed Martin is Trolling America

This week Lockheed Martin tweeted this image, which looks an awful lot like some artists' conceptions of the still secret Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) aircraft being developed for the US air force.

Here's one of those images.

And then this.

Could that have something to do with Lockheed Martin's teasing about high speed aircraft? I mean, there was absolutely no reason to tweet about the SR-71 long after it has been retired, let alone drop those hints that it isn't the fastest aircraft any more.

It's hard to know what to make of these. But people working on secret military projects absolutely do like to tease about what they are doing. For example, the patches issued to people working on secret projects often reveal quite a lot, and people obsessed with these projects devote thousands of web pages to analyzing them. This one is said to be the patch for a unit testing a new stealth drone.

The reveal of the finalists for the NGAD is approaching, probably in 2024, so that silhouette may really be a glimpse at Lockheed Martin's design. As for the high speed aircraft thing, most of the US government has been saying that in an era of satellites there just isn't much use for super high speed aircraft. But who knows?
