Girault de Prangey's Grand Tour

Pioneering photographer Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey (1804-1892) took a grand tour from Europe into the Middle East in 1842-1844, creating many glass plate negatives of famous monuments. Some of these are now in a show at the Met. Above, the view from the gate of Antioch, 1844. To see these correctly you'll have to click on them. They don't wow me as art but they are among the earliest photographs of some of these places.

The Roman Forum in 1842.

Philae, 1843.

Istanbul, 1843.

  1. To see the Forum correctly, it must be reversed? (mirror image)? Is this true for all the photos? Appears to be a reverse of a view from Palatine Hill looking N.E.
