Mourners

Small statues of mourning women, from a Greek tomb in southern Italy, c. 300 BC

  1. If you asked me without any context to describe how the figures appear, "in mourning" would not have been it. Is it just the fact that these were found in a tomb that leads to them being ascribed a character of mourning?

To be fair, I suppose there are many types of mourning, and certainly in history there have been traditions and rituals and whatnot that I find utterly baffling... so perhaps it's just me.
