A Bronze Age Wheel from the British Fens

Wooden wheel, about 3,000 years old, from the Must Farm Site in the fens near Peterborough. Diameter about a meter, or 3.3 feet. You can see that it was formed of boards bound together.

One interesting question is why people had a wheeled vehicle in this marshy site, which sat on pilings next to a river channel. Perhaps there is a corduroy road somewhere nearby that has not yet been found.

Well we've got a river, and we've got wooden pilings... surely a dock isn't any real stretch of the imagination? If you're loading and unloading ships, a wheeled conveyance to help move cargo down the length of the dock seems only logical.
