Among the Pagan Slavs

This leather mask, recently excavated from a privy pit in the old Russian city of Novgorod, dates to the 12th century. It was probably used in pagan religious rites.

I read hints from time to time about the fabulous archaeology of medieval Novgorod, where waterlogged soil has preserved clothing, parchment, leather, wood, but I have not been able to find any decent account in English or German of what has been found.
