This leather mask, recently excavated from a privy pit in the old Russian city of Novgorod, dates to the 12th century. It was probably used in pagan religious rites.I read hints from time to time about the fabulous archaeology of medieval Novgorod, where waterlogged soil has preserved clothing, parchment, leather, wood, but I have not been able to find any decent account in English or German of what has been found.
